Up until the introduction of the Door Shox, there weren't many choices for people. You either made your own home grown car door guard contraption or purchased an off the shelf car door guard. There are three general types of car door guards on the market:
(a) stick-on car door moldings (b) magnetic car door guards and (c) hanging car door protection. Selecting the right car door protection is important and each product category has its pros and cons. Stick on car door protectors are the most popular door protector out there. Car dealerships usually sell an OEM car door protectors at a hefty price. The car door protector is sometimes pre-painted to match the vehicle color or have a matt finish. While these car door guards help protect against minor door impact they are usually mounted to low on the door and do not provide enough car door protection. Magnetic car door protectors are usually bulkier and generally provide greater car door protection. The good thing about magnets is that the product fastens securely to the vehicle door. However, many of these car door protectors have exposed magnets that can easily scratch the car door paint. Some people try vinyl magnets which are gentler, but there is still the risk of scratching when installed on a dirty, critty surface.
